Red Ribbon Week: October 22-30

Red Ribbon Week is America's oldest and largest drug prevention campaign, and Teen Health & Wellness is the right resource to support drug awareness and prevention.

Colorado's Cherry Creek High School used Teen Health & Wellness last year in their Red Ribbon Week showcase. By displaying posters to catch students' attention and posting lists of the database's resources for easy access, Cherry Creek High was able to promote the database as a trustworthy resource that was tailored to student needs.

Need posters or bookmarks to display in your learning community? Check out the promotional materials page for free downloadable materials or contact us for print copies available to subscribers.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the American Cancer Society, about 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer at some point in their life. Teen Health & Wellness can provide support to teens who have a friend or family member diagnosed with breast cancer. The database also provides extensive information on the disease, as well as health, examination, and prevention tips.

Browse the articles on Breast Cancer and Breast Health and Examinations and share with your teens during the month of October.

NEW Updates on MyPlate and Food Guide

The new MyPlate food guide was introduced by the United States Department of Agriculture and First Lady Michelle Obama on June 2nd, replacing the long-standing Food Pyramid, and Teen Health & Wellness is now fully updated with the new nutrition initiative. MyPlate was designed to be an easy-to-understand visual that shows how much of each food group you should be eating.

Create your personalized MyPlate food plan and read more about the MyPlate initiative by visiting the MyPlate/Food Guide page in Teen Health & Wellness.

RMM

Students at Red Mountain Middle School in Deming, NM, have access to Teen Health & Wellness thanks to the support of their librarian, Cindy Smith. She has used THW to teach entire classes, allowing the students to choose their topics as she acts in a guiding capacity while they conduct their own research. Students also use the database in Health class, for research in other classes, and as the main resource for an assignment required if they miss a PE class.

Cindy told us: "As the librarian, I am able to guide our students to this resource when they are physically in the library. Additionally, I have placed a widget on our website that students can click on and get directly to the database. This helps students access Rosen when they are using the Internet outside out library building. Our usage is growing because of the valuable, accurate information that is presented."

Download the widget for your library's site, and check out the Program Ideas and Lesson Plans to help implement THW into your class curriculum.
