Text-to-Speech Coming in January

Beginning in early January, each article in Teen Health & Wellness will feature the text-to-speech function to help students read and understand the content. By simply clicking the "Listen" button at the top of any article page, students can listen to the content and read along as the text is highlighted. This important feature supports students with learning difficulties and struggling English language learners.

In the text-to-speech player, the Settings link will let the user choose text highlighting on a word per word or sentence basis, or to disable text highlighting. You can also control the speed of the reading and select a male or female voice. The "No Sound" link can be used if your system requirements do not allow for text highlighting, and it will download an mp3 file of the audio for that article section.

Get Connected on Facebook and Twitter

If you're not already a fan or follower, become one and be sure to share with your teens! We update our Facebook and Twitter pages with lots of fun extras, like timely video finds, weekly polls, and interestings stories in the news to educate, enlighten, and spark discussion amongst our teen audience.

Keep teens connected by downloading the social media poster to hang in your school or library.

Eileen Whited, Librarian at Fredericksburg High School in Fredericksburg, TX, puts posters on restroom doors and uses tape to attach bookmarks to the bottom of the posters for students to take along as a reminder. She also places bookmarks in the health section of the library and inserts bookmarks when students check out books from the library.

Visit the Promotional Materials page for more ideas on how to promote the database to your teens and to download posters and bookmarks for your school or library.
