Coping With Natural Disasters

Last month, Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast, causing billions of dollars of destruction and devastating loss of life. It's never too early to prepare for a natural disaster, no matter where you live.

Teen Health & Wellness can help with tips for disaster preparation, resources for if and when a disaster hits, and real-life stories shared by teens who have dealt with natural disasters. We're here to support and help your teens understand and deal with the serious issues affecting our communities.

Stand Up, Speak Out

This year's US election saw a record number of young adults heading to the polls. In fact, 19% of all voters were youth voters (age 18-29)! This election was the first for many young voters, and now is a good time to keep them motivated to stay involved. There are lots of ways teens can stay active in their communities, even when it's not a big election year. Encourage them to volunteer, run for student government, support a cause, and learn more about their own rights as a citizen. We've got articles that can help, on volunteering and activism and citizenship skills.

DUI Prevention

December is National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month, and Teen Health & Wellness is full of content to support your special programming. Sample articles include:Alcohol Abuse and Binge DrinkingDrugs, Alcohol, and Emotional HealthDrinking and DrivingDrugs, Alcohol, and Peer Pressure; and When a Friend Has a Drug or Alcohol Problem.

And check out the two great videos created by teens at Springfield High School and Dover Middle School. Encourage your teens to make their own videos which could be published in the database and featured in our next newsletter!

Pump Up with THW Boot Camp

If you're just getting started with Teen Health & Wellness (or you just need a reminder!), we want to make sure you know there is much more to the database than just the articles!

The Librarian/Educator Resources section is your go-to spot for all the tools you'll need. If you're in a classroom, start by exploring the plethora of lesson plans available. No extra work for you! If you're in a classroom OR library, test out some of the program ideas we have to share. Many of these have come straight from YOUproven success! Most important, make sure you teens know about the database. Download posters, share the mobile app, and get them involved with either the writing project or video challenge. And if you have a great success to share, be sure to let us know about it!

  • Plan a Study Break program as the end-of-semester stress starts to hit. Highlight related articles on stress management and study skills.
  • Use the "It's Your Cause" Video Challenge to create videos to feature on your school's website, or have them performed during morning or afternoon announcements.
  • Have teens write their own article on how to use the database. Feature it in the newsletter, newspaper, or website. An easy way to get the word out!
