Federal Spending & Government Shutdown

The news was flooded last month with stories on federal spending and the debt ceiling as a result of the U.S. government shutdownand one thing we learned is that there is nothing simple about global economics! Financial Literacy can help make these complex concepts accessible to the members of your community, creating knowledgable and engaged fiscal citizens.

New content on Federal Spending, Default, and the Debt Ceiling can help your users understand the economics behind the government shutdown as well as its impact and ways to prevent debt and default in their own fiscal lives.

Teen Health & Wellness Video Project Highlights Classroom/Library Collaboration

Westhill High's teacher Debbie D'Angelo and librarian Karen Fenner collaborated for a health class unit on the dangers of drug use. Students worked in groups to research a particular drug and answer the question, "Should this drug be legal?" The information provided in THW allowed students to examine the costs of drug use on society and the individual. Students then created Public Service Announcements about the dangers of drug use by using information from reliable sources. They were told the PSAs would be viewed in class and the best ones submitted to THW.

In the words of D'Angelo and Fenner, "Students were highly motivated by the opportunity to be included in the database! Everyone wanted to win. And it was really a win-win situation for all of us - students were focused and productive because of the real-world audience, and as instructors we saw real learning and high quality student products."

Quick Tips
  • Organize an Internet Search workshop. Use articles on finding credible information to create a list of rules about online information.
  • Have students create their own budgets to demonstrate the concepts of credit, debt, and default.
  • Promote your resources! Hang up posters, distribute bookmarks, and put widgets and web buttons on your school/library web page. All these materials are available on the Promotional Materials page in the Librarian/Educator Resources section of each database!
